Company Q’s Current Attitude Towards Social Responsibility

As a small grocery store located in a large city, there are issues of social, employee and business responsibility. Currently, Company Q is facing some difficult times and choices. With closing two stores in higher crime areas, there is a sense of distancing themselves from the community. While not the intentions of Company Q, the message sent tells the community that there is no care or concern for them.

In other markets Company Q is actively in, there have been requests for years that there is an option of more health conscious products. These products have a high margin and a high price tag. The customers know that there is a steep cost to the products and still want the availability of them in the store. By not reacting to the requests of the customers, Company Q is showing that the company itself is not there to serve the needs of the customers. The entire reason a company is in the retail business is to serve the customer, not have the customer serve the company.

When a not for profit organization like a local food bank approaches a company for donations, there are always opportunities to grow. Growing in the public eye is the most important growth opportunity. By donating and performing charitable acts, local companies like Company Q will build customer loyalty. The concern over employee theft is a narrow minded and short sided vision on behalf of Company Q. There are ways to keep internal shrinkage down so that Company Q can manage loss more effectively while maximizing community support.
