Genji is the second son of Japanese emperor. Even he was delegated to civilian life for political reasons, most people still admire him and love him. He was born in capital and had been living in capital for most of his time. There were ladies he loved and home he lived in the capital. Why he left capital, where he used to live, and moved to suma, which is a coast far from capital.

Genji was being forced to exile by Kokiden. The reason was that one of Genji's affairs push he into a bad situation.

Lady Kokiden was emperor's consort of higher rank. She was jealous of Genji's mother because emperor like genji's mother much more than her, so that he disliked Genji a lot. Since Aoi married with Genji, Kokeden became to hate Genji more, because she had intended to let her son married with Aoi. After Kokiden's son, Suzaku, inherited the throne of emperor, she had become powerful because she was the Empress Mother. So did Udaijin, the Minster of the Right, because he is the father of Kokidon.

Someday, Udaijin catch Genji's affair with Oborozukiyo, Udaijin's own daughter. He was very angry and told the affair to his elder daughter, Kokidon. When Kokedon got the affair from her father, she plotted to eliminate Genji from court for revange all the old and recent grudges between Genji and her. Finally, Genji was striped his rank and exiled to Suma.

Genji had to leave capital to Suma because of his affair and political opponent. In addition, he also tried to protect his son, whom they don't know the boy was not Emperor's son but Genji's. Therefore, Genji had decided to voluntary exile before the punishment announced from the imperial court.

Genji's exile was not only the result of relationship between him and Kokiden, but also the result of political struggle.
