Introduction

In order to remain profitable and competitive in a fast growing global market, many companies have to do whatever it takes to make sure that they not only reduce their overall costs but they also have to make sure that they are able to control costs. This task can seem daunting, especially during precarious economic times. Therefore, those who are key decision makers of the organization will often be faced with having to reduce their workforce. While reducing the workforce of an organization is often thought to be a normal business decision of key decision makers, those who are taking the lead in this area often make decisions without fully understanding the underlying implications of reducing their workforce. For example, decisions that are made poorly and in haste will often result in an outcome that would more than likely ‘unfavorably affect their workforce, brand image and business results” (Sniffin, P., & Hornberger, M., 2012). This means that the organization is then exposed to a plethora of risks that would include, but definitely not be limited to: the possibility of lawsuits, having less engaged employees and even having the image of the organization tarnished in the eyes of customers of the organization. Therefore, when an organization is faced with the need for a reduction in workforce, it would be important for key decision makers to prepare carefully and strategically in order to reduce any risks associated with the voluntary and/or involuntary workforce reductions. This implies that all key decision makers of the organization would act in good faith, exercising due diligence when making decision(s) that deal with separation of employment.
