Whether the research is applied or basic, qualitative or quantitative, certain steps are applicable to each research. Designing a valid research needs first and then using the research techniques that most directly meet needs. Research design involves a series of steps that provides a system approach to research. The steps are referred to as the research process.

2. Decision -making steps in the research process

Step 1: Choice of research topic

Prior to starting a research project, one of the most important steps is recognizing and defining what is going to be studied. Identifying or determining the topic or problem sets the groundwork for the rest of the research.

The research topic serves as the foundation of research study. If it is well formulated, you can expect a good study to follow.

For example, embarking on the study of crime can be too great on undertaking without focusing on a specific aspect crime, such as types, causes or punishment. Therefore it is important to specify the target of the research first. Doing this will make completing the remaining stages easier.
