1. Executive Summary

Workforce planning is the process of identifying current and future staffing needs on the basis of current internal and external information. It focuses on retaining existing staff as well as attracting new employees to ensure we have the right number of people, with the right skills in the right jobs at the right time, now and in the future.

This Workforce Plan sets out the issues, evidence and strategies required to deliver a sustainable Summer Council workforce capable of continuing to deliver high quality services to our community over a five (5) year period and deliver on our vision

Key Issues

The key issues that will affect our workforce are:

Demographic changes: the ageing of the population and the shrinking workforce. Age profile is one factor that determines our services. And the ageing of the population and the associated projected decrease in young and skilled people is likely to directly influence the potential pool of employees available to us;

Skill shortages in a number of occupations required by local government to serve the community. Our current workforce encompasses a range of occupations that require a variety of skills...
