Defining and Classifying group

First of all, we have to understand the definition of group. Group is a collection of individuals who interact, interdepend and work together to achieve a goal. Groups can be divided into 2 types: formal and informal.

Talk about a formal group, it is a collection of people, who come together for achieving a specific goal. It possesses an organizational structure, in hierarchical form. Formal group can be used to separate the work tasks between individuals of different levels of skills. For example, 6 members in marketing department work together with their manager to finish the company’s project. Formal groups can be also classified in 2 small groups. It is command and task group.

Talk about command group, it can be understood in this way: The group that consists of managers and their subordinates. Like those members and a manager in the Marketing department, it’s called a command group.

Secondly, Task group consists of people who work together to complete a common task. However, a task group’s boundaries are not limited to its hierarchical superior. Let’s say it can cross command relationships. An easy example for this is if a student is committed in school crime, it requires communication and coordination not only a dean of academic affairs, but also a dean of student affairs, a director of security, student’s advisor. All of them working together to solve the problem, it’s called a Task group.

Okay, that’s all about the Formal group. Next, I’d like to talk about the Informal group

The groups that are formed by the employees themselves to satisfy the social needs from their job are called Informal Groups. For example, 3 employees from different departments have lunch or playing football together. That is informal group. Informal group can be classified in 2 small groups.
