Name Paul Newbauer Date 27 June 2014

1.Explain whether the evidence used below is effective or not effective in proving the points and WHY/WHY NOT.

What would be needed for the evidence to be stronger?

A. Women are too emotional. My mother either cries or yells at my brother. I have seen her do that so many times.

-Ineffective, too broad of a reason/example, does not give anymore examples- who knows how credible the source is….

B. This evidence was used by a student in a speech to encourage other students to change their diet: “A Dr. Smith who works for Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Company says that students should eat ice cream before all exams in order to increase their alertness. The sweetness and cold temperature interact to stimulate the cells and make the body more alert.”

-Effective, gives credible source/example

C. The average salary of teenage workers in California is $8.00/hour, which is above the Federal minimum wage. I don’t see why anyone is considering raising the minimum wage—teenagers make $8.00/hour—that’s not bad for the kind of work most of them do.

-Ineffective- the evidence is there, but its irrelevant & improper because minimum wage is not just for teenagers, also they state that it is not bad for the kind of work most of them do- where are the facts?

D. A friend tells you that she heard on a TV ad that 3 our 5 dentists recommend Aspirin for toothaches, so she is going to buy Aspirin for her recurring toothache since so manydentists have recommended it.

-Effective- 3 credible sources recommended, but you have to use some common sense also…
