Any organizations that is striving to become great has got to have a lot of quality workers, diverse workers, and a strong leader. A great business leader is someone who is confident, someone who is persistent, and someone who can come up with new ideas for an organization. In this paper we are going to explore the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the General Motor Company, Mary Barra. We are going to explore Mary’s position with General Motors (GM), her greatest achievement and which leadership theory best describes her approach.

As mentioned earlier, Mary Barra is the CEO of General Motors. The reason I choose this particular leader is because she was the first woman to ever accomplish the tsk of becoming the CEO of a major global automobile maker (forbes.com). General Motors is one of the best and well known vehicle manufacturers in the United States. Mary was born in Waterford, Michigan which was very close to General Motors. Mary began working at General Motors at the age of eighteen. In 1980 she began her educational journey as a General Motorist Institute co-op student. In 1990 she graduated from Stanford Graduate School with a masters in Business Administration. She has worked in every position in the company. Mary has held the position as CEO for two years, she took the position in February of 2014. Mary is affiliated with the General Dynamics Board of Directors Board of Directors of the Detroit Economic Club, and a member of the Business Council along with a list of other affiliations.

Ethical Leadership Theory was the approach that Mary took. Lets take a closer look into what ethics are. Ethics are the value and beliefs that tells right from wrong. Leadership is the steps of persuading individuals to achieve their goals. With that being said, we can understand that ethical leadership the method of influencing individuals while focusing on principles, beliefs and values that reflect what has been defined as proper behavior.
