Edgars contract analysis.

Tone

Tone being describe as the writers or speakers attitude towards his or her audience and material. The tone used by the writer in the Edgar’s contract is relatively aggressive as the writer tries to inform the audience of the consequences involved by accepting a credit facility. For example, when the writer indicated, “you will be charged with default administration cost”. The writer had used a direct active voice in trying to emphasize the effect of signing a contract. The degree of the aggressiveness of the tone would be noted when the writer said, “you must pay Edcon monthly installments due every month”.

Style

Style is the manner of writing or speaking. The style of the contract is formal because:

-the sentences are complete

-sparing use of personal pronounce

-slang, abbreviation had been avoided

Functions of the text

The functions of the text are informative and directive.

Informative-the writer is informing the audience about all the steps required to complete a contract as well as all the benefits and consequences involved. The informative function is emphasized when the writer said, “by signing the pre-agreement statement and by accepting and retaining your credit card facility, you acknowledge that you accept these terms and condition”. The writer is informing the audiences that by signing the contract, you will be adhering to the terms of the contract.

In informing the audiences about the benefits associated with Edcon group of companies, the writer attempts to direct or induce certain type of behavior in the receiver, thus being directive. The directive function was used when the writer said, “Join the Edgars club!”, also when the writer said, “Do more of the things you enjoy and get more of the things you need for much, much less”. The message is trying to induce the audience to act accordingly. For example, by the statement above the writer is trying to induce the audience to join the Edgars club and enjoy...
