The functions of the text are informative and directive.

Informative-the writer is informing the audience about all the steps required to complete a contract as well as all the benefits and consequences involved. The informative function is emphasized when the writer said, “by signing the pre-agreement statement and by accepting and retaining your credit card facility, you acknowledge that you accept these terms and condition”. The writer is informing the audiences that by signing the contract, you will be adhering to the terms of the contract.

In informing the audiences about the benefits associated with Edcon group of companies, the writer attempts to direct or induce certain type of behavior in the receiver, thus being directive. The directive function was used when the writer said, “Join the Edgars club!”, also when the writer said, “Do more of the things you enjoy and get more of the things you need for much, much less”.
