Corporations can have numerous leaders with various different titles; however, all superiors will eventually be classified into one of the three different levels of management. The level of management that I chose to discuss in this week’s assignment is strategic, which just so happens to be the top level of management. Top level management consists of the Chairman, Board of Directors, President, Vice President, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, etc. These individuals are essential in the control and oversight of entire organizations. Some of their responsibilities include the development of goals, strategic planning, creating company policies, and decision making that can impact the livelihood or survival of a business.

In the scenario given, Joe Smith is the employee at the corresponding level of management that I’ve chosen. The setting states that he is the second generation CEO for the corporation and that he has the final authority on all decisions. Given the fact that this is one of the highest positions held, Joe has an abundance of obligations and commitments to fulfill.

Planning, organizing, leading and controlling are very crucial aspects when it comes to the functioning of all management levels. As the CEO, Joe will be responsible for the full operation of the company including matters such as budgeting, forecasting facility capabilities, managing production, etc. None of these task can be completed without a proper plan in place so this is one of the many reasons why planning is very important. Planning is the backbone of effective operations and failure to plan is planning to fail. For Joe’s company to be successful, he must utilize the planning function to maximize full potential. Organizing is the next function and one key feature of this task is job design.
