Case Incident 20.1

1. What do you think is causing Braddock's problem?

a. The control systems are inadequate and there is no sort of quality control and assurance in the company. The post fabrication inspections are a failure, because they only analyze problems after they occurred.

b. the ex-employee Shorty has been seen talking to current employees and nothing was done to investigate this matter.

c. There was no audit performed on new supplier and the quality of their work to see if it met the company guidelines. They would produce would withstand the force of the current machines/equipment that are used.

2. Why is the problem more pronounced on the construction model than on the homeowner's model?

a. Shorty McCune, was accused of drinking on the job was released and seen around the plant with the possibility of influencing several other employees.

b. A new supplier was used for supplying the raw metal due to an attractive price break; this possibly led to a worse metal quality.

c. There was 3 days’ of a supply gap in between the two products. Braddock is possibly using Just-In Time (JIT) inventory control and only order new supply as needed, however without having a good amount of time to do the proper quality inspection on the new supply.

d. Quality management has been failing for the past few days, proven by the defect that has been showing on the recent production.

3. How can Braddock eliminate its problem?

Braddock can take the QA approach that emphasizes the prevention of defects and mistakes rather than finding and correcting them. The idea of “building in” quality as opposed to “inspecting it in” is the basic philosophy of quality assurance. This approach views quality as the responsibility of all employees rather than the exclusive domain of a quality control department. Also, auditing all suppliers before ordering to insure company guidelines are being met.
