Michael Tornabe Logan Bus Co. Discussions About Nuclear-Powered Cars

"Transportation as you know it will be changing in the next 10 years or so." This statement was made by Michael Tornabe in a discussion about the future of transportation around the world. Even though cars, trains and planes have transported people around the globe all through the twentieth century, these modes of transport as we know them will soon be old news.

We are looking at transport taking the form of zip lines, magnetic levitation and many other interesting forms. Some of the changes that we are likely to see with automobiles include driverless cars and nuclear-powered vehicles. Today, the thought of nuclear energy is scary because it is associated with armament. However, in the future, it could be a part of our everyday lives.

An American company, Laser Power Systems, has been working to see how radioactive energy can be used to power vehicles. They have been speaking about the advantages of thorium. "Thorium is a radioactive element known to be the major cause of heat generation at the earth's core" explained Michael Tornabe. Many nations are figuring out how they can use thorium in their nuclear power plants but Laser Power Systems is looking to use it for something different.

Laser Power Systems wants to use thorium in its car engine. They are building one whose engine will simply be powered by radioactive material. Thorium would generate heat and that heat would then be focused so that it turns water to steam, causing several micro-turbines to spin and generate electricity.

"Since Thorium is a very dense element, it tends to hold lots of energy. In fact, a nugget of 8 grams will be able to power an automobile for more than a hundred years" said Tornabe. This means that the need to refuel your car with gas would be completely eliminated. If you are tired of paying for gas, you can definitely appreciate that!
