Karabo Mohale

First Female SRC President

“Growing up girls would herd the goats and the boys would wash the dishes, and that is how it was done in my family. This is the reason why to this very day, I never see my gender as too weak to do anything in life. Looking back I think this was one of the greatest lessons that my grandmother taught me”

Karabo Mohale (24) was born and raised in Ga-Matipane Village, Limpopo by her grandmother, while her mother, a single parent was working tirelessly to sustain the livelihood of the entire family. She attended primary and secondary school at PEPPS in Polokwane and later completed her matric in the Northern Academy with distinctions.

“I have always been a hard worker. Anything with my name on it had to be excellent. In Grade 7 I was awarded the De-Beers Dux Learner Award for having graduated top of the class. Since then, I have never looked back”, she said.

Karabo mentions that throughout her high school career she has always wanted to study at TUT. This came as a result of her interaction with the University in 2006, when she was selected by Old Mutual as Limpopo’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year. She was then given an opportunity to present her ideas to the former SuperSport United coach, Pitso Mosimane. The presentation took place at one of the University’s residences, Magalies, and it was during this event that she finally decided TUT is her University of choice.

She enrolled for a National Diploma: Marketing in 2010 and completed it in record time. In both her first and second year, she received merit bursaries for academic excellence. Her interest in politics came alive in 2012, after she volunteered at the Directorate of Student Life and Governance as a student assistant. That same year, she was deployed to be the 2012/2013 treasurer of the Local Representative Student Council (LRSC), at the Pretoria Campus.
