Oral History

Communication today is completely different from years ago and the youth in this era communicate differently than youth in the past decades. I sat down with my older sister (Kelley jones) for an interview based on how times of communication have changed. There is a 9 year age difference between me and my sister and sitting down talking with her I’ve taken notice to a lot of changes in communication from now and when she was younger. The first thing my sister pointed out was technology. She explained how technology wasn’t as advanced as it is now. She had to use the house phone to call her friends or landlines none of them had cellphones when she was in high school. When I was in high school everyone in the house had cell phones. This caused her communication with her friends to be less frequent but more valuable. That compared to my school days I would text and call people on my cellphone all day and night. Dates and outings were more interactive because people didn’t have a cellphone or social media to be constantly updating or changing. And everyone didn’t know your business from social media. She explained guys had to come correct to a girl instead of looking for her on social media trying to spark a conversation. When my sister wanted to communicate with her friends she would call them on the house phone, wait to see them at school, or walk to the persons house. She explained the communication by saying it was more exciting because they hadn’t talked all day so the things they had to tell each other they couldn’t wait and there was never a dull moment or being bored. What she has learned in her life about communication that she would pass down to me is keeping a conversation and in person people skills go along way oppose to talking to someone social media.
