All around the world communities are being evaluated on what issues affect them and what can be done about it. Public health professionals work together as an organized team to figure out what their particular community needs to improve upon such as preventing illnesses by getting a vaccination, or developing a wellness program. Each society has differing concerns when compared to others because there are many factors to consider that can influence needs being income and location. A community that is typically hot during the summer will set up cooling centers to give the public the opportunity to come in for shelter if they have nowhere else to go. The well-being of their community members is the focus of public health offices everywhere. However, there are offices that care for the nation as a whole and are not just looking at a particular county in a state. There are those who take on the responsibility of researching and planning for a nation to see what can be done if there was an outbreak or how we can prevent one from happening.

Public health in the United States began in 1798 when President John Adams signed a law that stated all members of the Navy would go through health screens when returning home from foreign ports. This allowed the government a chance to prevent a potentially deadly illness from slipping into American communities via sailors coming home. These constant screenings later led to hospitals being built all along the coasts to be readily available in all ports for these sailors to come and get medical attention. Once major diseases began spreading across the globe such as small pox, these Marine hospitals were already in place and were able to begin quarantines for those who arrived from affected areas.
