FATHERS OF AMERICA

Our readings would indicate that fatherlessness is becoming an increasingly large problem in America, and our society as a whole should address this issue. Blankenhorn in an article titled “Fatherless America”, states that statistics show that today almost 40 percent of children live in a home with no father present. The issue of fatherlessness is the leading cause of many social problems, to predominantly adolescent pregnancy, and physical/ sexual abuse amongst children. The question is, can this trend be reversed, and if so how? It is my belief that we can reverse the fatherless trend, but it will take more than just a government program to do so because children need an active and nurturing father in their daily lives.

We are faced with a daunting task of changing not only the way society looks at fatherhood, but what it takes to be a father. This sentiment is echoed by Blankenhorn. Any male in society unless he is sterile can contribute to making a child. It then becomes a matter of educating both males and females what comes after conception. We teach sex education in our schools, but we do not teach anyone about the responsibilities associated with bringing a child into the world. Not just schools, but faith based institutions will need to jump into teaching children and young adults about this responsibility. Family members must also get involved.

Once a child is brought into the world, there needs to be some sort of community services to help the mother and father who are new to parenting. Blankenhorn insists there must be a high level of parental involvement. There are government programs that provide financial and medical assistance, but what of emotional support. Should we not teach our children everything entailed in raising a child? Raising a child requires a lot of sacrifice. Father's especially, need to learn that their social life is going to change drastically, and that they no longer can spend money on whatever they wish....
