Seniors and Gardening

It’s no secret that the aging population is growing. On a national level, older adults age 65 and up hit 46.2 million in 2014 (14.5% of the U.S. population), and accounts for about one in every seven Americans. Meanwhile, this demographic is annually increasing at a steady rate of 28%. In Hawaii, the population of older adults is increasing at an even higher rate (190% annually) than the U.S. and the life expectancy of a Hawaii senior is higher than the national average at 81.

Amongst this older population, there is a clear correlation between age and prevalence of chronic conditions and level of disability, such as dementia and physical decline. Arthritis, a joint disease affecting over 50,000 adults worldwide, can deteriorate bones and cartilage and significantly limit function due to pain, swelling and stiffness. From 2010 to 2012, almost 50% of seniors reported having some form of arthritis and about 1 in 22 adults with arthritis have reported significant functional limitations in grasping. However, seniors ages 65 and up want to remain independent and have strong interests to stay involved in their community, learn new skills, and support intergenerational relationships; Gardening could be a wonderful way to support their active lifestyle.

According to the National Gardening Association’s 2014 Garden to Table report, 15 million older adult (ages 55 and up) households conduct food gardening activities, representing the largest age group of food gardeners. Gardening has multiple benefits for seniors that go beyond providing a recreational activity; it can provide therapeutic value to seniors by increasing energy levels, improving outlook on life, decreasing stress, increasing socialization, promoting ambulation, and encouraging positive reminiscences.
