SUMMARY - EXAMPLE

One characteristics of effective learning is the area of discussion

among classmates. Such interaction is potentially an ideal place for

students to form a learning community, but instructors should not

assume that all students will participate or learn from this form of

collaboration, particularly in online courses. Our recent research

demonstrated that student progress in economics classes result in

better performance by classroom students than by online students. The

research indicates that the differences were due to access to the

instructor and to cooperation with fellow students in classroom courses,

facets that are unavailable to online students.

Summary: Research by Chizmar and Walbert (1999) showed that

students in classroom-based economics courses achieved more than

online students in the same course. The research revealed that estudents had less interaction with the instructor and fewer opportunities

to collaborate with classmates.
