Ethephon is a popular plant growth regulator belonging to the phosphonate family. Ethephon is used to promote pre-harvest

ripening, to aid in harvesting and promote post-harvest ripening. Ethephon is used by farmers to initiate reproductive

development of fruits. Ethephon is sprayed on pineapple fruits to degreen them to obtain marketing requirements. Ethephon

helps to stimulate ripening in fruits that have reached a certain minimum stage of maturity. Certain changes accompany

ripening of fruits include production of ethylene rises, fruits become softer, the rate of respiratory heat production increases, a

cut develops between fruit stem and spur and starch in the fruit is converted to sugars.

Ethephon is used to promote ripening in soft fruits, top fruits and cereals such as rice, wheat, tobacco, cotton, sugar beets,

tomatoes, fodder beets and coffee among others. Ethephon is used to aid in the harvest of fruit and berry crops. It can be used

to accelerate the ripening of bananas and pineapples. Other uses include accelerating the maturation of tobacco, stimulating

the flow of latex in rubber trees and the preservation of cereals such as flax and maize. Ethephon penetrates into all tissues of

the plants to which it is applied and is metabolized to phosphate, ethylene and chloride ions.
