The New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are one of the most profound sports teams of all sports. They have accomplished so much in their one hundred and nine year history. From their most notable statistic twenty seven championships which is the most by any North American sports franchise in sports history, the only team anywhere near them are the Montreal Canadiens who have twenty four. They have also been able to win forty pennants, along with sixteen division titles and three wild card berths. These stats alone make them the most successful of all time. The team has seventeen retired numbers and forty three Hall of Famers in their team history.

The New York Yankees weren’t always known by that name. They actually held two different names before this one stuck. It all started in 1901 when a man by the name of Bancroft “Ban” Johnson who at the time was president of the Western League wanted to make certain moves to assert his league as a new major league to compete alongside the National League. So he renamed his league to the American league, with this he wanted to also add teams to eastern cities. His first move was to put a team in New York but that was easily shut down because of the NL’s New York Giants. The team had connections with Tammany hall so it gave them the political power to keep the move from happening.

Instead the team was moved to Baltimore, Maryland. They were known as the Baltimore Orioles, and this lasted until 1903 where at a “Peace Conference” the decision to put another New York team to coexist with the giants was passed by a 15 out of 16 vote decision. This brought the nine year era of the New York Highlanders. This ended after the 1912 season, and in 1913 they were known as we all know them now the New York Yankees. From here on out there has been many trials and tribulations but they have been able to succeed like no other sports team...
