My Type of Chemical Reaction

For thousands of years when people hear the word gold they think of something having extreme value or being beautiful. People think this is because of two properties of gold; its color and chemical stability. Gold gets its color from the electronic structure of the gold atom which complies with electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths less than 5600 angstroms but resembles wavelengths greater than 5600 angstroms-the wavelength of the yellow light (“Gold Processing”.)

Gold is dense and lustrous. No other substance has been more widely recognized through- out history than gold. Gold can be changed and used in many different situations and in many ways. I’m only going to name a couple of them. First of all gold can be melted and formed into different things (“Gold”.) It can be shaped and sculpted. Also, the yellow metal conducts electricity and doesn’t tarnish. It can be shrunk down and added to salt to help treat arthritis. It can also be flattened into super small sheets. Two characteristics of gold are its malleability and flexibility. The last one is that you can use gold to build structure like India’s Sripuram Golden Temple (Business Insider Inc.) Gold can also be used for many different thing such as book covers.

The Process

Through geological processes, gold is concentrated in certain areas, which is the reason we have gold ore. The way it works is by the chemical reaction is called the “Elsner Equation”. The Elsner Equation is 4 Au + 8 NaCN + O2 + 2 H2O → 4 Na[Au(CN)2] + 4 NaOH. This type of chemical reaction is a synthesis reaction (“Gold Cyanidation”.) Gold benefits our society in many ways and we don’t even know it. First, it benefits our society because it’s the most useful metal in the world. Also, people use gold to symbolize a lot of important and different things in our lives. Dentists have used gold for 3,000 years for things. It is a good metal to use because it isn’t toxic. They use it for...
