In Chapter 4 we learned about the structure of the cell membrane and how this structure allows for passive and active transport of substances that the cell needs to move both in and out of the cell.
Original Alphabetical
What are three functions of cell membranes?
allows for movement of substances in and out of the cell
communication
protection
What is the main function of the cell wall?
structure and support
Identify the parts of the cell membrane-
A is a phospholipid molecule
A1 is the phosphate head
A2 is the lipid tail
Identify the parts of the cell membrane
A
A1
A2
A1 is hydrophilic (points inside and outside cell near water)
A2 is hydrophobic (tucked inside the membrane because lipids do not mix with water)
Which part of A is hydrophobic (water fearing) and which is hydrophilic (water loving)?
lipid bilayer (two layers, like a sandwich with two pieces of bread and jelly stuck in the middle)
What is H showing?
C is a protein with a carbohydrate attached that functions in identification of the cell (so no other cells come and attack it because it will be recognized as you!)
What is C and D in the membrane? What is the function of this structure?
G is a protein channel used for diffusion (no energy required to move through)
What is shown by letter G? What type of transport is occurring through this structure?
E is showing cholesterol and adds structure to the membrane
What is shown by structure E? What is this molecule's function?
What do you know about diffusion?
(include what moves by this method, is energy required or not, and from what concentration to what concentration does movement occur)
Diffusion is the movement of any substance through a selectively permeable...
