Abstract

Computer technology is a major integral part of everyday human life. The hub of data information is growing rapidly and so is the ability to commit computer related crimes such as financial fraud, personal data breaches and intellectual property theft. Computer investigations look into the data that can be taken from various devices, hard drives and external storage devices and use the data collected to determine if the devices(s) have been breached or unlawfully authorized.

Intellectual Property Theft

Intellectual property theft is the act of robbing people of their ideas, inventions and creative expressions. This can include such items as trade secrets and proprietary products and parts to movies, music and software. Intellectual property theft is a growing threat, especially with the rise of digital technologies and the internet file sharing networks. Much of the theft occurs overseas where the laws are lax and the enforcement is difficult (FBI.gov). Stealing intellectual property is cheap and easy. All a thief has to do is copy someone else’s idea or product and reap the profit. Intellectual property can cost people their jobs; damage the reputation of the original maker, cause sickness and bodily harm. It can also deprive the government of much needed tax revenue. In addition it can also result in the spread of organized crime and gangs (National Crime Prevention Council). Intellectual property theft is not a victimless crime, IP theft is often distinguished by its low cost and the ease by which it can be committed. Recent advances in technology and manufacturing have contributed to the prevalence of intellectual property thefts. Gonzalez (2006) stated in an article regarding IP theft and corporate America that “U.S. companies are finding themselves increasingly vulnerable to the global threats to both their intellectual property coupled with the privacy and security of their company and customer information.” In the United States,...
