1 In your own words, summarize each of the major theories of biology. Choose one theory and provide an example of how this theory relates to the news today. Use at least one outside reference in addition to your text.

(1) Evolution by Natural Selection: the theory of natural; selection is “only the strong survive”. This is simple terms means that a life form more adept to it environment is most likely to prosper and evolve than a life form with less ideal characteristics.

(2) Inheritance: to receive or pass on characteristics from parents to children. A child will resemble the parent while not looking identical. Genes passed one from the parent will manifest in the offspring in a manor to which those genes can be traced back throughout the lineage of the gene.

(3) Cell: all organisms are composed of cells and all cells are from pre-existing cells. Therefore a cell is also a life form in its own right. This theory came about with the advent of telescopes, to aid the eye in seeing objects as small as a single cell structure.

(4) Biological Classification: Biological classification started much earlier than most other theories. Biologists deal with millions of species. Organizing and keeping track of so many “life forms” is confusing and complicated at best. Classifying living organisms was done according to their similarities and differences. Classification came to be based less on similarities and differences in form and more on evolution of the species.

(5) Bioenergetics: The energy that powers life operates according to the same rules that govern energy in the inanimate universe. Chemical reactions in cellular form, reacts to power life forms beyond “stagnation”

(6) Homeostasis: Organisms function best when their internal conditions are maintained within rather narrow limits. Organisms tolerate a wide variety of external conditions when internal conditions remain stable.

(7) Ecosystems: Organisms interact with each other and with their...
