Due to the rise of antibiotic resistance, we need to have a clearer understanding on what antibiotic resistance is, where it comes from and why it’s an issue in health care and what it will mean for you as sanitation staff.

Antibiotic resistance means an antibiotic is no longer effective with treating or killing the bacteria present. This happens when we overuse antibiotics, making bacteria adapt and evolve to their environment. These antibiotic resistant bacteria, can over time convert all of your healthy bacteria into superbugs that are indestructible. It is reported that infectious diseases kill more people than cancer, (Video-Rise of Superbugs). We are being treated with antibiotics when it’s unnecessary, such as the common cold and sore throats. Common colds and sore throats are viruses and cannot be treated with antibiotics. Developing superbugs in this environment is a significant health issue because these superbugs will not only effect individuals but the future treatments of other modern medicines (Video-Rise of Superbugs).

The sanitation staff has a very crucial role in the prevention of the spreading of disease in the Nursing Home. The patients, families and staff depend on you to keep the facility safe and free from infectious harm. It is of utmost importance for staff to review the infection control guidelines yearly and implement these guidelines on a daily basis. It is also important that if you witness someone not following the guidelines to report it to your supervisor immediately. These guidelines are in place to prevent the
