Statistics Project: Commute Times

Due: July 19, 2016

In this project, you will use data to calculate various statistical values such as: mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, range, standard deviation and z-scores. You will also create tables and graphs to help analyze the data. You will be asked to reflect on your findings.

First, each student will gather data from five people on their daily 1-way commute time to school and means of transportation (drive self, ride with others, public transport, walk or bike, other). This data will be collected from each student in the class and the aggregate data will be used in the project. Make sure to write down the five data items you supply as you will need it to answer questions in the project.

In this project you are required to do the following:

1. Use the aggregate data for your class from your instructor.

2. Create an Excel spreadsheet and:

* Put your name, course name and project name on your spreadsheet

* Use Excel to find the following statistics: Mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, the 25th Percentile, 90th Percentile, and Standard deviation. Refer to page 66 in your book.

3. Choose five data items in your spreadsheet. Calculate the z-scores of these five data items.

4. Create visual representations of the data.

* Create a frequency distribution table of the frequency of commute time in minutes for the data. To do this you must first determine what range of values to use for each class interval. Excel’s ability to sort data will be useful for this, but you do not have to use Excel to determine the frequencies.

* Construct a histogram of the frequency of commute times from your frequency distribution table. Refer to page 123 in your book.

5. Write a reflection paper about your experience with this data project. Remember that we are looking for elegant and sophisticated reasoning. Include the following items:

* Your name, course and name of...
