Company Q has a terrible attitude toward social responsibility. This company cares very little about its communities and much more about its profitability. Granted, most businesses have to be concerned about their bottom line and making smart business decisions is what ultimately allows them to stay in business. However, there can be a balance between a business’ profit margins and its positive impact on society. Company Q chose to close down locations in higher crime areas due to profit loss, and thus far the only concern it has shown to the consumers has been the introduction to more organic, healthy food options. When given a huge opportunity to set itself apart and show its support of the community with food donations to the food bank, Company Q refused, showing a lack of trust in their employees and a lack of interest in the community.

Businesses have a unique opportunity to give back, often times this can also be a benefit if they choose to write it off on their taxes. Company Q’s decision to simply waste food, instead of using it to feed those in need in an obviously needy community is disgraceful. Their decision to close down locations in needy communities is disgraceful as well. There are several things Company Q can do to help improve its reputation and potentially its profitability as well.

First and foremost, Company Q needs to donate its leftover food to the foodbank. Anything that would have been thrown out and is still safe to consume will now be donated on a daily basis. By instituting a simple checks and balances system between store employees and foodbank staff, management should feel secure in their decision. Inventory will be taken of perishable items at the start of the day, then again at the end of the day. A volunteer at the foodbank will take inventory of the donations at their arrival and send back the signed checklist to management.
