Emotional intelligence is a person’s ability to recognize and control their emotions and feelings. You also have to learn to recognize and the emotions and feelings of others around you.

Dimensions of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Self-awareness is the ability to recognize your own emotions and feelings. Once you recognize your emotions you learn to adapt to them and manage, which is self-management. Social awareness is when you understand the feelings and emotions of others and how you react to them. The ability to relate to others while managing conflict is relationship management.

Enhancing self-awareness starts the process to achieving higher emotional intelligence. Understanding our own emotions helps us to better understand what others are feeling. An example of emotional intelligence:

Say you’re an employee starting a new job. You have been on the job for 2 weeks, but still needs someone to show you what to do. The boss has been on your back to get it together or you will be fired. The boss keeps comparing you to a co-worker that got hired the same time as you, but that co-worker is doing great and needs no supervision. How do you handle this situation?

Depends on how low your emotional intelligence is you might not react well under stress and lose your job. In the same situation someone with high emotional intelligence will still be stressed out but react much differently to the situation by adapting and managing the issues which results in a positive outcome. My EQ test results were excellent. It states I may want to seek clarification from a peer, co-worker, or family member to validate how they feel that I respond when under pressure. It recommends I attend the more advanced programs in performing under pressure.
