HOW OUR FANTASIES DISSOLVE
WOMEN’S WEEKLY
19th of September, 1959
I find myself on the first floor of a Victorian two-story dwelling, featuring decorative lacy ironwork, and a typical Australian veranda, located in the heartlands of Melbourne. Here, Nancy Allaway, a popular freelance writer in Australia, spends most of her time writing short stories and articles. As I wander around in her office preparing to interview her, her home and chosen décor remind me of the honest values of her popular articles and short stories. The view from her window reminds me of the scruffy, but once fashionable suburb of Carlton. I can sense the smell of cigarettes outside, the murmur of quiet talk, and the smell of her grass on the median strip beyond her front window.
It’s September, and I stand in her office, ready to interview Nancy. Nancy has truly inspired women nationally with her articles and short stories that have been dedicated to her own experiences throughout her life. Today, she is going to release for her final short story, ‘Fantasies dissolve’. She is going to retire from her career as a writer, repudiating a once in a lifetime opportunity to share her talent. This has shocked her fans and aspiring female writers. We talk, and she tells me her reasons, and her plans for the future.

Q: G’day Nancy, thank you for inviting me today. Could you give your fans an insight as to why you are giving up such great success in your career?
A: Well, as you know, I’ve been married to Harry Allaway since 1954. He worked as a bookseller, while I was obsessed with novels back in the days. We met at a bookstore in 1952, and we occasionally smooged round whenever we bumped into each other. Our marriage today is going steady and great, as it is a new exciting life stage for me.
