Transporting Equipment

Loading and transporting equipment is a common cause of injury and equipment damage that often goes overlooked. Learn how to protect yourself below.

• Equipment that has been improperly loaded could shift or fall. This is a potential injury to workers, a danger on roadways, and a loss of equipment.

• Equipment that is being transported on unsuitable routes may come in contact with hydro lines, causing a potential injury to the truck driver.

• As a rule, you should use one chain for every 8500 pounds (3855.5 kg) of weight, or one chain for every 3.1 m of cargo

• Check all anchor points for the chains

• Always conduct a pre-trip inspection on both your equipment and vehicle. Check every chain before using it; look for cracked, bent, twisted, or stretched links. Look for fluid leakages, rocks, and other debris.

• Check for broken or cracked side or pocket rails, support, or welds, rails bent or distorted where hooks or fittings attach, and floor rings that are nicked or gouged, worn, twisted, bent, stretched, or with broken welds

• Keep chains straight and tight

• Be sure to flag the machine if it exceeds the width requirements for transporting

• Check to be sure all items on the trailer and the machine are secured

• Make sure the machine is properly chained down and balanced

• Within the first 25 miles (40.2 km) after beginning a trip, re-check all load securing devices and make proper adjustments Always know your route before transporting tall equipment.

• Confirm all appropriate bodies have been informed and permits have been acquired when moving large equipment. This includes MIT, Manitoba Hydro, and MTS.

• Move slowly and carefully when transporting tall equipment. Constantly check to make sure you have ample clearance.
