It can be difficult for a company to figure out how to socially responsible. When that company is small, such as Company Q, the problem can be compounded due to lack of resources. Companies have to ask themselves what their responsibility is to the customers, community, and environment while still trying to make a profit.

Company Q was not making a profit in the two stores that they had to close. If the stores were losing money, it stands to reason that the owners were also losing money. Tough decisions sometimes have to be made. The decision that Company Q made to close the two stores was likely a good one that would let their focus go to improving the remaining stores.

By providing the organic and health conscience food that their customers had been asking for, Company Q made a positive move for their business as well as social responsibility. Business wise, a high margin product is going to turn more of a profit. As far as the social responsibility, the United States has an obesity problem and healthier products should be widely available so consumers can be more easily health conscious. In addition, organic products are held to higher standards and lack most chemical additives. This is not only healthier for consumers, but for the environment.

Unfortunately, it seems that is where the social responsibility ends for Company Q. The decision to throw food away as opposed to donate to a local food bank is simply irresponsible. It is as if the decision wasn’t completely thought through. The food is being wasted instead of helping those that are less fortunate. It seems as if the benefits of donating the food would likely outweigh any possible fraud that may occur. The reputation of the company would improve, bringing in more customers.
