In this technologically advanced world, innovations very frequently give rise to new technologies which are superior than the old ones and soon standard war begins between them to become the standard format.

The war between Betamax and VHS is one such example. Sony came out with Betamax and JVC came out with VHS as a new video tape recording format but in spite of the fact Betamax was superior in quality, VHS became the standard format for video recordings.Soon CD replaced VHS and later DVD replaced CD with its higher capacity and better video quality.

Now when the market demanded something that has more capacity and better video quality than DVD, Sony and Toshiba launched Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats respectively to replace the standard DVD and the war to become the next generation high-definition DVD format began once again. Blu-ray had to struggle initially because of its high price and late start and it seemed that HD-DVD has replaced the standard DVD format but the higher capacity of Blu-ray, almost double that of HD-DVD helped it capture the market pretty soon.

The main features of both the technologies can be compared using the table drawn below-1
