On November 24, 1924 Theodore Robert Bundy was born in Burlington, Vermont. Ted never knew his father and was only told that he was in the armed forces and that his parents had only went on a few dates before his mother got pregnant with Ted. Because Ted’s mom found it difficult to raise Ted on her own, she placed Ted in foster care for two months. Ted’s mother decided to co-parent Ted with her parents.

Ted and his grandfather got along very well with one another. Ted recalled him and his grandfather going on camping and fishing trips while growing up. However, other family members described his grandfather as racist, and intolerant. Ted’s grandfather was verbally abusive towards him and his wife. Additionally, Ted’s grandfather abused animals, and the family pet. Despite his faults, Ted adored his grandfather. Sadly, years later, Ted’s mother got married and Ted had to leave his grandparents and move across the country to live with his mother and stepfather. Ted Bundy did not have any connection with his stepfather and was bitter about being forced to move from his grandfather.

When Ted was young he became obsessed with females and obscure sexuality, "...as a boy, he would pick through trash cans and search for pictures of naked women" (Shadow 2008). This was possible due to limited parental supervision. On the other hand, Bundy was often bullied in junior high school. This resulted in Ted often being subject to humiliation. It is believed that the lack of early attachment to his parents as an infant, being subject to bullying, and being around his abusive grandfather, led to Ted becoming a psychopath. It is not known how early in life Ted Bundy began killing, but there were early indications of abnormalities in his personality. For example, as a young child, Ted displayed extreme shifts in mood and behavior. One minute he was fine and then the next he would morph into this whole other person.
