Tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC, has been a controversy for years and will be for years to come. THC is known mainly because THC is illegal in most states and people use the substance to get a high. The feeling that someone gets from THC is the number one reason that people use THC. However, it would only be fair to mention both sides of this controversy. THC is also medically used in several states in the United States for diseases such as cancer. Although THC is illegal in many states and causes many bad sad effects it has been proven by medical studies that THC can be helpful when someone is suffering.

THC is found in marijuana. It is important for a person to understand what marijuana looks like and consist of to know that it does contain THC in it. “Marijuana is a green or gray mixture of dried shredded flowers and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa” (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2009). A Cannabis sativa does consist of THC no matter what another person might tell someone. THC is a drug that many people use for the high that it gives them but there are some cases where THC is used for medical purposes. There are currently twelve states that have legalized THC for medical purposes, three that have special circumstances, and that still leaves thirty-five that do not except THC period. The drug THC is produced by “extracting the cannabinoids from plant material with a solvent” (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2009). One of the main controversies with THC is the harm that it can cause to a body. THC is harmful and affects the human body in several different ways. When arguing whether THC should or should not be legal this is one of the main reasons to look at. The way THC works in the nervous system is very peculiar.
