One Page Summary

Background

Located in New Zealand, Otago Musuem was founded in 1868, originally located in post office. In 1877 the museum expanded onto a new property. Up until 1955 the museum was managed by the University of Otago, but it was then transferred to a trust board. It currently attracts 300,000 to 400,000 visitors a year, and employs 60 employees. Their mission statement is “to inspire and enrich our communities and enhance our understanding of the world through our collection , our people and the stories we share”. It’s vision is “be an inspirational museum of which the people of Otago and New Zealand are proud”

Internal Analysis

Otago Museum has a strong management team that inspires the work force to be motivated and highly successful. The employees are involved in decisions along with all other stakeholders, which creates a unique organizational culture. Their mission and vision is highly incorporated in all parts of the business. The museum is a leader in education, and offers a variety of high quality knowledge. Along with the motivation management provides and the culture in the organization, the Otago Museum provides an excellent return for its stakeholders, even if it isn’t a financial one at this moment.

External Analysis

Social factors include that people exploring the world, and having an interest in what the world has to offer. Economic factors include the recession and how it affects consumers spending behaviours. Technological factors are continuing to change and it is hard to keep an interest on the past, and the natural things. With regards to political factors, the governments are encouraging citizens to go out and learn, and are spending more money on arts and education. For Porter’s five forces, the risk of new entrants is high, as there are many different potential entrants tot he museum industry.
