Planet Earth is a living, breathing, and nurturing place that we humans call home. One day this living, breathing, and nurturing planet might just stop doing its job due to the many physical activities carried out by humans’ everyday. This one and only home that we have has a very delicate environment, an environment that is being polluted with each and every given day. Through the environment and the geological features the Earth has to offer it supplies us with our basic needs. The basic necessities the Earth gives us are water, air and land. We have to make sure we are protecting and regulating these basic necessities, which are accessible to us by our environment. The two words “environment and geology” go hand in hand with one another. We can call it environmental geology to make matters a little bit simpler. Therefore, environment is important in geography because the geological features such as landforms and ecosystems are the fundamentals of natural and human life. These two very important components of the environment must be sustained for life to thrive. Though this is very clear to us still everyday we contribute to the destruction of the environment by the progressive depletion of our rainforests, the desertification of arable land and the pollution of our water supply.

The ever-expanding population of the Earth has its own demands. These demands might seem very simple but have a residual effect on the environment. According to Crossing Borders, “it is estimated that every hour, 4,500 acres of tropical forest are plowed, burned, or cut down (Chernotsky & Hobbs). This implies that population growth contributes to the loss of trees, which are vital for our ecosystem. This destruction of the rainforest releases carbon in to the atmosphere and the outcome of this is global warming. If this continues the Earth will only get warmer and will result in more massive and life threatening consequences. For example: flooding, brutal weather patterns, and...
