Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. They have succeeded over the years in convincing medical professionals to make Pfizer drugs the treatment of choice for their patients aches and pains” ( Cravens, Piercy). Popular prescriptions such as Lipitor, Viagra, and Zolaf can be found on pharmacy shelves nationwide with Pfizer’s name on them. In recent years, the pharmaceutical market has begun to dramatically change and requires a transformation in the way drugs are being developed, tested and marketed. In addition, Pfizer has brought themselves negative publicity regarding their painkiller’s Celebrex and Vioxx. Without changing the way they market drugs as well as major restructuring of the company, the company is sure to continue to sink deeper.

II. Situation Analysis and Swot Analysis

Pfizer’s experience, and size gives them great advantages in the pharmaceutical industry as well as the power needed that will work in favor of this company revamping themselves. Their competition does not have the necessary tools or to be able to invest in long term development. Immediate funds are a vital tool that will help Pfizer with long term investments and competitors, and many competitors can’t afford to be shopping themselves right now with the uncertainty in the market. Chairman and Chief Executive Hank McKinnell should be shopping for drugs to store up on because of the $10 billion in free cash flow that was expected in 2005 and may have repatriated as much as $38 billion in overseas profits to take advantage of a one-time tax break.
