Popular American Culture

American culture is in the eye of the beholder. What one person considers being popular in the American culture, someone else may not consider to be popular. Popular American culture is a style or trend of music, fashion, electronically device, or customized vehicles, drinking, clubbing, and card games could be classified as popular American culture. These are the things societies as a whole takes part in.

Society as a whole teaches us that skinny is the new hot trend by advertising clothing modeled by super skinny models. These models advertise the clothing in a manner that catches the consumer’s eye. A plus size person could never become that size, but once the model paints the picture for the clothing, it gives the plus size person the illusion that they too could wear the clothing. All too often, we see advertisement commercials promoting weight loss pills, dietary supplements, plastic surgery and appetite suppressants encouraging society to lose weight. It seems like society tells us who we are, what we should look like, how big or little we should be, what hairstyles we should be wearing, what clothes we should be wearing, what vehicle we should be riding in, what style of furniture we should have.

In today’s society, we have used food as a way of escape. If society tells us eggs are good for us, we will buy as many eggs as we can afford. If society tells us that beef is the cause of or obesity we will have a decrease in beef sales. I remember when it seemed like everything we ate was contaminated except chicken. The next thing I know there was a huge outbreak of semolina poisoning. Then society began promoting commercials that fruits and vegetables very extremely healthy for you. On March 24, 2010, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) issued a recall on spinach for E. coli. There were 139 cases reported in 21 states that included 66 hospitalizations, and 20 cases of HUS.
