According to CNN 90% of the US population owned a cell phone as of 2011; why do the remaining 10% choose to live without these devices? Some people’s income prevents them from being able to afford a cell phone, while others do not want to rely on an electronic device daily. Many people are also concerned with the health risks associated with these devices. There are many reasons why one would not want to own a cell phone such as costs, constantly relying on electronics and health risks.
Depending on the quality and features of the phone, the costs can be unaffordable for some. For example, if a part-time worker wanted to buy a high-end cellphone, they may not be able to afford it on their current salary. Smart phones have been known to cost hundreds of dollars to purchase as well as maintain monthly. These costs can add up and cause many financial problems.
Some people simply don’t want to be dependent on a hand held device. So many people now rely on their smart phones to do everything such as research, weather, directions, event planning and text messaging. Many people do not have cell phones because they use their television, landline and computer to do the same thing a cell phone can do. These individuals believe the cell phone is not essential for everyday use and they can use other resources to get the same results.
Various people are concerned about radiation from cell phone use. There have been concerns about sleeping with your cell phone next to you or even holding the phone against your head to make phone calls. Many people believe cell phone radiation can contribute to or even trigger cancer to occur in the future. For example, if someone is using a cell phone from the age of 14 to 60 their chances of getting cancer can be at a greater risk. Cell phones are known to give off ionizing radiation which is the same radiation from gamma rays and X-rays which we know are very dangerous.
