Dear Journal,

I am the eldest of the children in the Maurizo family, my name is Dante Maurizo and I am currently working in the family business of carpentry. It is sort of up to me to help with all or most of the responsibility of the house due to the declining health of my father due to his Tuberculosis. There has been a lot of chances that are happening in the country which are not beneficial for myself and even more for my family. Considering, there is talk amongst the towns people who are looking to go to America for a chance at a better life for their family. I would love more than anything to be able to do something different, that way my family can have a better life as well.

Friday. February 10, 1:00 pm, Workshop

Dear Journal,

Today, was not such a productive day, due to father not being able to finish out the day as planned. Seemed as though his health is really into decline, due to this it might speed up my decision on embarking on traveling to the Americas sooner than I had hoped or even planned for. I hope that with all the talk that starting over will be an easy task to take on. Money is very tight around these parts due to the jobs that are available. Food sometimes is not even enough but we do try to make due. The resources that we have become dependent on are now going scarce and jobs few, while falling death rates and high birth rates created population pressure in the region. Disease and natural disaster also played a part.

I find it very hard to sleep because my father is coughing almost every two minutes because of his Tuberculosis bout and my pending trip to America. We have heard stories about people going to America and becoming successful and some not so good. Earlier today a family friend told me...
