Introduction

Organizations are becoming increasingly complex, leaner, faster and more technologically advanced. In my own organization these factors have created a complex and constantly changing environment that my colleagues and I have to continuously adapt to. Further, the different values, attitudes, opinions, beliefs and feelings about the organization, influence employees’ behaviours. These behaviours are a result of personality, background, environment, on-going changes and work-life conflict. Employee behaviours affect the profitability, morale and performance of the organization as well as the health and wellbeing of the employee.

Understanding the challenges and the resulting consequences for myself, my family and for my organization as a whole, prepares me to adapt and respond to situations. It also helps me find tools that I can use to help my colleagues to cope and even thrive through times of change and uncertainty.

Stress and Resilience

Failure to balance the demands of work and life is becoming increasingly threatening to the health of workers - and the health of organizations. While some stress can have positive effects, according to Dr. Esther Stenberg," If you're too stressed, your performance falls off". (Sternberg n.d.)

Organizations are facing challenges of a shrinking workforce, sandwich generation, increased competition for talent, multi-generational demands among others. It is time for organizations to make changes in order to meet employees’ needs for a balanced lifestyle to retain their talented and productive workforce.

Stenberg’s scientific findings of the co-relation between areas of our brain that control immune system and it’s relation to mind-body interaction opens up a whole world of possibilities. This knowledge has helped me understand on how...
