Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to explain the key components of leadership and how they apply to managerial skills. To illustrate that management is based on fundamentals, or base lines for people to follow. The tools that if put to use properly will ultimately lead to a successful career. Also, to show how the use of these components in real life situations will create discipline, loyalty, and trust from subordinates. A manager must also be able to distinguish the different working styles of employees, and how to approach different styles in the same situation. Lastly, how the leadership values are applied currently in my life, and how everything I am going through affects me in my day to day life.

In the class we discussed various theoretical and idealogical methods of managing people. All of the different methods discussed were to give us the tools to be able to effectively lead in the future. Management is defined in many different ways, but usually with the same general meaning. The text book used in this class defines management as, “The process of getting things done, effectively and efficiently, with and through other people.” (Robbins, Decenzo, & Coulter, 2011, p.6) Merriamwebster.com says, “judicious use of means to accomplish an end,” and thefreedictionary.com defines management as, “The act, manner, or practice of managing; handling, supervision, or control.” All three vary in the words used to describe what management is, but all three agree on the basis of the meaning. Management is leadership, it the group of fundamentals that a leader can use to effectively accomplish his goal(s).

The United States Army uses the acronym LDRSHIP to give soldiers a way to remember the Army's core values. The core values of the U.S. Army are; Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.
