Started in 1997 by co founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google has grown into the most popular search engine in the world (“Sergey Brin Biography”). Larry and Sergey met in 1995, when they were 22 and 21 years old respectively. Sergey had been given the task of showing Larry around the Stanford University campus, as Larry was considering the school after his graduation at the University of Michigan (“Our History in Depth”). The next year, Larry and Sergey found themselves working together on a search engine entitled “BackRub,” which “operates on Stanford servers for more than a year—eventually taking up too much bandwidth” (“Our History in Depth”). After BackRub, Larry and Sergey are inspired and want to take the limitless amount of information on the internet, and organize in such a way that makes it easy for the user to find what they are looking for, thus, Google.com is born. In September of 1997, Google.com becomes a registered domain (website) on the internet, the name being a play on words of the number “googol,” 1 with 100 zeros following (“Our History in Depth”). They quickly rise to popularity, as evidenced in 1998 when “‘PC Magazine’ reports that Google ‘has an uncanny knack for returning extremely relevant results’ and recognizes us as the search engine of choice in the Top 100 Web Sites for 1998” (“Our History in Depth”).

We will start with an introduction of our co founders/CEOs Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Born in 1973 to father Carl (involved in the computer science and artificial intelligence field) and mother who taught computer programming, Larry Page would earn a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Michigan and would then move on to pursue a doctorate computer engineering at Stanford University, where he met future partner Sergey Brin (“Larry Page Biography”).
