Drucker was born in Vienna in 1909 and began working as a financial reporter in Frankfurt, Germany, during the course of studying for a doctoral degree in public and international law at Frankfurt University. He wrote his first book, The End of Economic Man(1939) with the aim of strengthening the will of the free world against fascism. Drucker has learned to be outspoken and in The Practice of Management this quality of outspokenness is a delight . Equally, the depth of the content is a surprise for someone lacking any practical experience of management itself. In his later years an element of caution crept in once he became a consultant and celebrity widely courted by industrial corporations. Drucker did develop a remarkable ability to temper diplomacy with frankness like the civilized man he was. The manager is the dynamic, life-giving element in every business. Without his leadership ‘the resources of production remain resources and never become production.... Management express the belief that economic change can be made into the most powerful engine for human betterment and social justice.

The popular belief that new technology will replace human labour is utterly false. From his defence of the bold American approach to production, he turns to the social benefits conferred by Business. There is only one valid definition of business purpose; to create a customer. The customer is the foundation of a business and keep it in existence. According to Drucker ‘Financial rewards are not enough . People needs rewards of prestige and pride.... Every management job should be rewarding and satisfying rather then just the means to the next step up in the promotion ladder.
