In Creating America, Joyce Moser and Ann Watters argue, “In understanding American identities we need to come to terms with the unity and division, with separateness and common ground”, one can assume this argument is full of contradictions by the way Moser and Watters state it. One can assume this argument is a contradiction because of terms such as "unity" and "division", "separateness” and "common ground". Moser and Watters use contradiction for one to try and make a connection with how America works as a nation. Diversity makes everything contradict with races, and is what makes America different from the rest. America Identities contradict each other because America relates to public, while identities refer to something private. Secondary text such as “The Cult of Ethnicity-Arthur Schlesinger”, “Chicana-Martha Serrano”, “Loneliness ... An American Malady-Carson McCullers” and “Does America Still Exist? -Richard Rodriguez”, all relate to Moser’s and Watters' argument and support it which consist of contradiction and diversity.

The Cult of Ethnicity supports the idea of Moser's and Watters’ by showing examples of contradictions. For example Schlesinger says "The U.S. escaped the divisiveness of a multiethnic society by a brilliant solution: the creation of a brand-new national identity", referring to a country where one is suppose make their own decisions, but yet one is expected to get a new identity. Schlesinger supports Moser and Watters by showing the same beliefs, they both agree on America contradicting itself on pretty much everything. Being the twenty one century in a country who promoted justice and freedom for all, one might think that is the case, but at the end of the day it does not really seem that way. Another example
