Their Eyes Were Watching God – Novel Soundtrack

Track 1: Free by Broods

* The song talks about how living a life without risks makes a person feel trapped, so the singer instead would “lose everything” just so she could be free. This song describes how Janie often had people who expected her to be inferior or to fail but instead, she disregarded their judgements and left all she had at Eatonville to explore more of the world she wanted to be in with Tea Cake.

Track 2: Someone New by Hozier

* This song talks about falling in love “just a little ol' little bit” every day with someone new. It reminded me of Janie’s quest for love and how she had to try multiple times to get the love she was seeking. She also had a love for people; wanting to meet different folks and getting to hear their stories. She found some beauty in most individuals.

Track 3: Girl by Destiny’s Child

* This song describes the trust and understanding between Pheoby and Janie. It reminds of the scene where Pheoby is warning Janie of Tea Cake and overall how protective and caring Pheoby is towards Janie. Track 4: Even Angels Fall by Jessica Riddle

* This song talks about how there are great moments and there are terrible moments in our lives. It describes how Janie got through moments like these as she finds her way through life and love. Although she felt retrained, she pushed through until she could run wild and free. The song describes the thrill of living and how no matter what, “you’re on the ride” so “you might as well open your eyes” and enjoy each moment of being human.

Track 5: Smoke and Mirrors by Skye Sweetnam

* This songs describes a search for what to believe in as a young and naïve person, much like Janie. Janie has had Nanny and Joe decide the majority of her life while she lived with each of them, and she could...
