1. Anderson-Kratwohl taxonomy
The Anderson-Kratwohl taxonomy is also known as the Taxonomy of
Learning, Teaching and Assessing. This taxonomy retains much of its
structure from the Bloom’s taxonomy, but had been expanded to show new
ways of thinking about cognition and learning. Anderson and Kratwohl (as
cited by Killen 2015:102) believe that this taxonomy is driven by four
questions which are essential to teaching: a) what important things should
learners learn?, b) how can instruction be planned and delivered so that high
levels of learning are achieved?, c) what assessment instruments and
procedures will provide the correct information on how well learners are
learning?, and lastly d) how can teachers ensure that outcomes, instructions
and assessments are linked to one another?. In this essay we will look at the
four types of knowledge according to this taxonomy as well as the six
cognitive processes and what learners are required to do in each level of
processing.
Four types of knowledge
In Anderson and Krathwohl’s taxonomy, there are four different types of
knowledge that learners display. These types of knowledge being displayed
by learners are factual knowledge, conceptual knowledge and procedural
knowledge.
Factual knowledge
It is basic knowledge required to work in a disciple. It is the general
knowledge of thinking, learning and problem-solving. According to Killen
(2015:105) there are two subtypes in factual knowledge: a) knowledge of
terminology e.g. music symbols, and b) knowledge of specific details and
elements e.g. major natural resources....
