There are number of reasons to start your own record label versus joining a major label. Running your own label gives you much more freedom and you get a bigger piece of the pie in the end. There is a great chance for opportunity starting a label, just alone seeing how bad the majors are doing is incentive on starting your own. If you have plenty of talent that isn’t signed then that is a good opportunity and as long as the musicians are serious and will stay dedicated, chances are the label will grow and prosper.

Once you’ve made the decision to start the label, there are some things you must do to prepare for the business to be successful. The first is to mentally prepare yourself by reading and finding as many resources over creating a business as possible. Then once you’ve done your investigating, then it’s time to write a business plan that will outline exactly what you want to do. This is helpful with getting financial assistance, considering most professional financial institutions require some sort of plan with what your going to do with the money they are giving you. Go into detail on the expenses you will need, the staff necessary to operate properly and create a detailed financial summary of all of this.

When selecting the bands to join your label it is nothing that you want to rush, it will be a long process that needs to be thought out and many factors must be considered before choosing. Basically you want artists that sell records and can perform a live show. An impressive live act does a better job of catching the public’s eye more than producing a great studio album, being able to play live is an important factor when deciding the artist for your label.

The better they play live the more people will come to watch and the more albums they will sell. The band must have a strong line up that doesn’t always change and they must be free to do promotional interviews and meet with publicists with out a day job getting in they way. One of the...
