Five Steps to Case Analysis Method

1. Problem statement. Define and state the business problem specifically. It is a statement that focuses the argument on a single issue. It might acknowledge that other issues exist, but our purpose is to focus in on one issue and examine it as thoroughly as possible. A problem statement is usually only a couple of sentences long, though in some cases it may be slightly longer.

2. Analysis.

Part 1: the analysis explains and illustrates the problem statement, providing evidence to prove that it is indeed an important problem to address. The analysis should explain

a. Why it is a problem

b. Where the problem came from

c. What might happen if the problem is not resolved

Part 2: the analysis should include goals (long and/or short term) that the ideal solution will attempt to reach and a measurable objective. Note that goals are aspirational and objectives are attainable. In short, the goal in the analysis should help guide in developing alternatives.

3. Alternative Solutions. Provide two alternatives (to the SAME problem, not two different ones). They should be realistic and they should be expressed in concrete terms. Each problem must be developed by examining both benefits and drawbacks associated with it. There are no perfect solutions, after all.

4. Recommendation. Select one of the two alternatives and explain why it will best solve the problem and how it will meet your objective. Do not compare the two alternatives here. Finally, since the drawbacks were explained in the previous section, the student must address those drawbacks. This can be done by explaining how they can be addressed or why the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

5. Implementation. State the immediate action steps the reader can take to get the ball rolling (Action Steps).

You will write each Case Analysis in Memo Format utilizing the correct Section Headings.
