Check Point: Patient Compliance

Scenario 1 – Asthma

In this scenario the patient compliance issue is that she did not follow the doctor’s orders and fill the prescriptions. I think that the patient was doing her part, by asking questions and even being polite when brushed off by a phone call. In this scenario she should have not left the office until she was satisfied with the results she received. She should not have went home and thrown the prescription away, and contacted another doctor because she is still going to be billed for this visit, and her daughters health is at risk now, not in a month. She needed to be more understanding because the doctor was taking a phone call that was probably urgent, and he even offered for her to call with questions later on. I do understand her frustration because if it would have been my daughter I would have stayed until he was done with his call.

The communication problem that contributes to the lack of compliance is that the doctor took a call while with another patient and it made the patient feel unimportant and she was probably a little angry. If she was given his undivided attention, I think she would have filled the prescriptions and followed the doctor’s orders.

The doctor could have excused himself from the room and told her that he needed to take this call but would be back as soon as it was over. This would have allowed the mother to think of any other questions or concerns she might have had, and it would have been the professional thing to do on the part of the physician.

Scenario 2 – The Dentist

In this scenario the patient compliance issue here is that the patient does not follow the instructions that the dentists has been recommending.
